The gripper (11) for components (12) positioned on a conveyor belt has an optical detector (16) adjacent to the gripper to monitor gripping of the component and its movement through the gripper. The optical detector is connected to the gripper control circuit to supply picture information to aid control of the gripper. The optical detector can determine the contour of the component.
