The ECMO system is self-controlled in terms of its pressure and flow velocity. The interface between artificial and organic material (catheter and umbilical cord) is surrounded by a pharmaceutical fluid which prevents wear of the cord, and has antibacterial effect. The lungs of the child are kept wet, in order not to inhibit organ development.
