The side gas bag retention system has an elongated gas generator (12) and a gas conduit tube (18) connected axially with the generator, the tube having at least one outflow aperture (20) for gas which is diverted in relation to an axial direction (A) of the gas generator. The gas generator in the vicinity of a B-column (28) is fitted to a roof frame (14) of a vehicle so that the longitudinal axis of the generator is directed along the roof frame. The gas conduit tube is virtually completely accommodated in the gas bag and the gas generator is arranged completely outside the gas bag.
