The paint roller (7) is fixed between a shaft cone (2) and axial cone (4). The shaft cone is flanged on a drive (1) by which the paint roller is set in rotational movement. The rotationally mounted axial cone represents the counterpart to the shaft cone. The axis (5) which accommodates the axial cone is fixed to a baseplate (6). The baseplate may have pointed feet (8), or may have a suction cup or length-adjustable rods. The shaft cone and axial cone by which the roller is centered are designed so that paint rollers with different hub diameters can be clamped. A bucket (3) is provided as a splash guard and collecting vessel.
