Opening(s) (34) are equipped with flow controls. Preferred Features: The opening height is 0.05 x to 1 x the available height, i.e. the height of the annular channel or spacing between tube bases and the adjacent deflection baffle (22). Individual openings along the reactor circumference are most preferably 0.5-0.65 times the opening interval along it. Opening (34) geometry varies around the circumference. Opening(s) near the inlet are small, becoming larger and then smaller, further away from it. Flow control is by deflection baffles. Connections for valves and a circulation pump are provided. An expansion joint runs around the reactor casing.
