The tongs has a scissor-type mechanism with four lever arms. Each longer lever arm (6) has an inwardly projecting stop section (9) in its lower region for the element which is to be gripped. Each longer lever arm also has an outwardly projecting section (14) acting as an arresting aid in its lower region. Both longer lever arms are connected together, underneath the third hinge point (5), by a compression spring (7).
