The bin (1) with a device for compressing waste material has a press plate (5) with a handle (6) which is detachably fitted on the lid (2) of the bin. The bin conforms to the shape and volume of a waste-collecting bag (3). A waste-collecting bag when laid inside the bin is held during the pressing process by the lid and bin walls and thereby stabilized. The handle is fastened directly on the press plate, and an oval or elliptical opening is provided in the lid so that the handle can be selectively fixed to or released from the lid.
