The device has two image pick-ups (3a,3b) and two speed measuring devices (4a,4b), forming respective traffic inflow and outflow monitoring units. Data acquired by the two monitoring units are synchronized with a clock and evaluated together. At least one device, such as a GPS unit may be provided for determining the location of the monitoring units. The obtained location data may be combined with speed and image data.
