Spring and damper unit comprises a floating piston plate (7) which is acted upon by oil (3) displaced by the entrant piston rod (4) of the hydraulic cylinder (2) and forced through a restrictor bore (5). As a result, the piston rod (8) is pressed into a compressible medium (10) of the cylinder (9) until a desired static spring rate is obtained.
