Welding device comprises welding tongs (10) for holding welding wire, a protective gas feed and a safety unit in the form of a housing (1) for covering the welding site and open on one side facing toward the object to be welded. The housing has a seal (8) in the edge of the opening, a sealed passage (9) for the welding tongs, a gas suction unit (11) with a valve, and a window (13) for reducing UV radiation. Preferably the housing is made from aluminum. The passage is a folded bellows. The safety unit has a mirror (15) for observing the welding site. The seal is a heat resistant collar.
