A height adjustable light shaft in building construction has a U-shaped fitting which telescopes into a fixed lower shaft section and which is positioned at a selected height w.r.t. the fixed section. The U-section can be made of any suitable material including steel, cast metal and plastic. It has a lipped top which is made in one piece with the U-section or which is welded to the U-section.
