A separately movable armrest (2) joined to the upper end of two vertical bars (3) can be extended from the upper edge of the lateral part (1) of a chair. By turning a handle (6) two levers (5) are rotated around horizontal axles (4, 7). Both levers (5) are attached with their lower ends to a sleeve (10) sliding horizontally along a serrated bar (11) engaging with locking pins (13) protruding from the sleeve (10) in order to secure the armrest at the required height.
