A variable cooling system for a metal rolling mill has movable hoods (1, 2) above and below the height variable roller track (4) and with air jets to provide a cooling patterns. The air cooling pattern is controlled between side air curtains. The change to a water cooling system the hoods are removed along with a section of track and a water cooling track is moved from a storage position beside the track into the gap. The water cooling is via patterns of jets which are directed onto the rolled items from all sides.
