The hospital bed has a base (20) and a surrounding peripheral frame (30) having at least two side beams (39) and two end boards (38). The base forms a lying surface (21) and the end boards have vertical end panels (33a,b). At least one end panel is separable at least partially from the bed. The releasable end panel can have a lock.
