Hospital or care bed comprises a lower frame (1) and a height adjustable support (2). The support has head and foot adjustment drives (3, 4), especially direct current drives, with associated linear positioners. The drives are controlled by a control unit (7) that is coupled to an electronic spirit level that can be used to ensure the support is horizontal. The two drives can be adjusted automatically and continuously to ensure the support surfaces are always level.
