The invention relates to a method for positioning two grinding wheel working faces with respect to the flank faces of a rotationally symmetrical workpiece. The object of the invention is to position grinding wheel working faces and flank faces of the workpiece automatically with respect to one another such that uniform cutting and also minimum abrasion at the flank faces of the workpiece is guaranteed. According to the invention, the grinding wheel working faces (2.1 and 2.2) are positioned tangentially symmetrically with respect to the profile centre line (3) and also radially in a safety position (4) and from there are moved into a first centring position (5). The flank faces of the workpiece (1) are brought into contact successively with the grinding wheel working faces (2.1 and 2.2). The workpiece (1) is positioned in a calculated first centre position ( phi m1). Thereafter, the grinding wheel working faces (2.1 and 2.2) are moved into a second centring position (6). In at least two front planes (A, B) of the workpiece (1), the method steps for determining the rotational positions are in each case carried out on a plurality of test gaps (I, II, II, III).
