The optical communication system has one transmitter (1) that is used for the analogue cable TV signal (STV) and a second transmitter (2) for the digitally time multiplexed telecommunication signal (SD) that is specified to particular subscribers. The second transmitter has a coding device (23) and a high pass filter (22) for processing the signal (Sd). The transmitted optical signals (OTV,OD) are multiplexed over the optical cable (4) using an optical electric converter (24) and then demultiplexed (5) to be received by converter units (6). The converters generate an electrical signal (25) that is then processed using filters (26,27) and a decoder (28) to provide the two separate signals (STV,SD).
