The position controller is used to drive an adjusting element (17), which is especially in the form of a valve actuator, and whose travel is limited in at least one end position. It has a position transducer (9) which determines the position of the drive, and which generates a position signal (10). It also has evaluating equipment (11) which can store as a reference value the position signal for the end position on commissioning and which can compare with the reference value with the position signal which is generated at the end position during subsequent operation. The equipment can report the extent of any deviation from the stored value via the adjusting element, and this can also be displayed on further equipment (16).
