Disclosed is a method for regulating the speed and/or the distance of a first vehicle (1) in relation to at least one preceding vehicle (2) during a passing maneuver. A detection system (15) provided in the first vehicle (1) that continuously detects at least the directly preceding vehicle and at least the position of the lights indicating the direction of travel (16, 17) and the position of the steering wheel or the yaw rate of the first vehicle (1). After the driver of the first vehicle (1) has actuated the left lights indicating the direction of travel in preparation for the passing maneuver, the distance to the directly preceding vehicle (2) is reduced until a minimal admissible distance (13) to the directly preceding vehicle (2) is reached, whereby the evaluation unit checks whether a collision with the directly preceding vehicle (2) can take place in the present driving situation, at least until the minimal admissible distance (13) has been reached. If danger of collision with the directly preceding vehicle (2) is detected, the initiated passing maneuver is aborted and the first vehicle (1) is brought back to a preset safety distance (12).
