A nucleotide sequence is new and corresponds to (fragments of) an allele of the Extension gene (E gene), allele E1. A nucleotide sequence is new and corresponds to (fragments of) an allele of the Extension gene (E gene) a 966 base pair sequence (fully defined in the specification), allele E1 , the fragments comprise: (a) the nucleotide sequence delimited from nucleotides 285-681 of the allele E1, especially 473 base pairs of E1; (b) the nucleotide sequence delimited at nucleotides 1-285 (! 2 nucleotides) to a nucleotide at position 307, especially comprising 92 base pairs delimited by the nucleotides situated at positions 1-92 of the nucleotide sequence of E1; (c) a nucleotide sequence delimited from a nucleotide at position 308-328 to a nucleotide situated at position 681 of the sequence for the allele E1, especially; (i) comprises a nucleotide sequence delimited from a nucleotide at position 308-328 and a nucleotide at position 691-966 of the nucleotide sequence of allele E1; (ii) a fragment of 381 base pairs of the allele E1 and delimited by nucleotides at positions 93 and 473. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) use of the nucleotide sequences corresponding to different allelic forms of the Extension gene (E gene) from the bovine genome or corresponding to fragments of the different allelic forms, useful for the identification of different populations of cattle or different cattle herds regrouping each populations or breed of cattle; (2) primer pairs comprising approximately 10-30 nucleotide characterized in that they are selected so that one of the two sequences hybridizes with a sequence about 10-30 nucleotides comprising a sequence delimited at positions 1 and approximately 285 of the nucleotide sequences of alleles E, e, ED or E1, 954, 953, 954 and/or 966 base pair sequences, respectively (all fully defined in the specification) so that the other sequence hybridizes with a sequence of approximately 10-30 nucleotides comprising nucleotides situated at 670 and 954 of a nucleotide sequence of the nucleotide sequences of alleles E or ED or comprises nucleotide situated between positions 669 and 953 or 682 and 966 of nucleotide sequences of alleles e and E1; (3) a process for the identification of cattle populations or breed, or of cattle herds for rounding up several cattle populations or breed using a biological sample e.g. sperm, embryo, blood, milk, hair, carcass or meat or other derived products, allowing the control or even certify, whether an animal belongs or doesn't belong to a cattle population or breed or to a particular cattle herd, comprising: (a) amplifying the number of copies of different allelic forms of the Extension gene (E gene), namely alleles E and/or e and/or ED and/or E1 and/or fragments of the alleles, specific for a cattle population or breed or of a cattle herd and is susceptible of being present in the biological sample; (b) detecting the allelic forms (or fragments), optionally after enzymatic digestion of the allelic forms or fragments with the help of the appropriate restriction enzymes; (c) and optionally detecting one or more other fragments of ADN specific cattle populations or breed determined to differentiate between the cattle populations or breed within the livestock, especially fragments of ADN from the amplification of (parts of) genes implied in the coloring of the cattle coat; and (4) a kit for carrying out the identification process comprising at least two primers.
