DNA sequence (I) comprises at least one coding region comprising: (i) a 1396 bp sequence (1) that transcribes a mRNA encoding the terminal oxidase associated with biosynthesis of carotenoids (2); or (ii) a (1) modified by one or more of mutations, additions, deletions and/or substitutions of nucleotides, transcribing a mRNA encoding (2) or a modified enzyme with equivalent activity. DNA sequence (I) comprises at least one coding region comprising: (i) a 1396 bp sequence (1) that transcribes a mRNA encoding the terminal oxidase associated with biosynthesis of carotenoids (OTBC, a 351 amino acid sequence (2), reproduced); or (ii) a (1) modified by one or more of mutations, additions, deletions and/or substitutions of nucleotides, transcribing a mRNA encoding (2) or a modified enzyme with equivalent activity. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a DNA sequence (I'), or its fragment, complementary to (1) and transcribing an antisense mRNA; (b) mRNA transcribed from (I), particularly from (1), and encoding (2), or its modified form with activity equivalent to the OTBC in a plant; (c) antisense mRNA transcribed from (I') or its fragments; (d) protein (III) with the activity of (2), or any modified form of OTBC, also their fragments; (e) complex (IV) formed between antisense mRNA of (c) and mRNA encoding OTBC in a plant; (f) recombinant DNA (Ia) containing (I) inserted into a heterologous sequence so that all or part of mRNA encoding all or part of OTBC, with activity equal to that of the plant enzyme, is transcribed; (g) recombinant DNA (I'a) containing (I') inserted into a heterologous sequence so as to transcribe antisense mRNA able to bind to mRNA that encodes OTBC in the plant; (h) plant transformation vector for increasing biosynthesis of carotenoids containing all or part of (1) plus an origin of replication functional in plants; (i) plant transformation vector for reducing or preventing biosynthesis of carotenoids comprising all or part of the complement of (1) plus an origin of replication functional in plants and producing a mRNA that hybridizes to the mRNA encoding OTBC; (j) plant cells transfected with the vectors of (h) or (i); (k) plants and their parts (particularly fruit, seeds, petals and leaves) containing cells of (j); (l) a process for modifying the production of carotenoids in a plant comprises increasing the production of carotenoids or decreasing or inhibiting the production of carotenoids produced by the plant comprises the transformation of plant cells with a vector (h) or (i); and (m) production of carotenoids in plants, eukaryotic or prokaryotic cells by transformation with the vector of (h).
