Cleansing the skin to reduce Candida albicans infections comprises applying a cosmetic composition containing, as amphoteric surfactant, undecylenamido-propyl betaine (I). (I) is N-(carboxymethyl)-N,N-dimethyl-3-((1-oxoundecenyl)amino)-1-propaminium hydroxide and is commercially available as Amphoram U (RTM). It is known to be useful against Pityrosporum ovalae and has been used in anti-dandruff shampoos FR99078683. The new compositions may also contain an anionic surfactant. The compositions preferably contain amphoteric surfactants (5-15 %), comprising (I) (5-7.5 %). The amount of anionic surfactant present may be 0-8.1 %, with the total amphoteric plus anionic surfactant content not exceeding 23.1 %. The compositions are preferably presented as gels for intimate cleansing, or as liquid soaps and lotions for cleansing the face.
