The optical collimator for monomode fibres (F) comprises a section of fibre providing expansion of the S1 mode, and a section of fibre for maintaining the expansion (S2). The optical collimator for monomode fibres (F) comprises a section of fibre providing expansion of the S1 mode, and a section of fibre for maintaining the expansion (S2). The two sections of fibre may be of the same diameter. The maintaining section (S2) may be provided by a multi-mode step index fibre. The maintaining section (S2) may alternatively be formed by a monomode fibre having a core diameter which is greater than that of the monomode fibre for which it is provided. The section of fibre providing the expansion (S1) may be formed by a fibre with a doped core, or alternatively may be formed by a number of fibres of different types.
