The car parking system uses portable telephones to enable recording of parking request, and collection of payment. An initial voice request is followed by the provision of relevant data to identify the vehicle and the parking location, sent by mobile telephone. This is then used to facilitate direct billing of the car parking customer in proportion to the time spent in the parking space. The car parking is managed in a centralized system using portable telephones. Requests for parking are addressed vocally to a central server, and control is effected by means of a server interrogation after a digital reference has been communicated from the parked vehicle to the server. This digital reference is provided by a radio frequency marker which is situated on the vehicle. Further information may be provided to identify the vehicle - the make, model and co lour, the registration or a self-adhesive number of the windscreen. In addition a geographical code for the parking location is provided, along with a corresponding co lour-based tariff.
