Circulating a foam through an installation in a series of blocks comprises blowing a gaseous phase and a liquid phase through a porous packing. There is a foam generator at the installation inlet means of suction at the installation outlet and means of generating foam in blocks (TM) such as a control valve allowing liquid to be injected into the foam generator intermittently. The porous packing is at one end of an installation so the resulting foam goes into and circulates round the installation to a second end. The blowing is achieved by suction to create low pressure in the installation at the second end. The foam is collected at the second end and destabilized to obtain a liquid which can be reused after purification. The foam is a cleaning and/or decontamination foam. Suction is obtained using a vacuum pump with a condensate trap and a vessel to collect the foam at the outlet, with means of recovering the liquid from the destabilized foam and pump it to the means of generating foam. This may be via a means of purifying the recovered liquid.
