The boat distress buoy attached to a boat cabin includes a flashing light or radio transmitter (9) supported in a rigid hollow plastic bowl (1); a sealed casing (14) with cover (6) connected to the casing by a hinge (5); a rechargeable battery (2); an air filled balloon (4) activating an arm (34) which opens the cover and withdraws an arm (21) freeing a propulsion spring (16); and a line (17) stored on a bobbin (3) connected to the buoy. The propulsion system can be a propulsive powder fired by a detonator. The air filled balloon when in the water, opens the cover, by moving the arm (34) so that its drives the pivot (19) of the hinge (5). The beacon is connected to the boat by ring (36) and line (17) which is normally wound on the bobbin (3) fixed in the casing. The beacon (9), balloon (1) and batteries (2) are ejected from the casing (14) by the spring (16) which draws out the line (17) by ascending movement of the arm (34).
