Method for checking and measuring liquid level in a container or tank in which a mechanical gauge (27) is vertically mounted in a filling hole. The lower part of the gauge comprises a float (17) that indicates the fluid level. The float is linked to a needle (14) on an indicator screen (10). The position of the needle is set prior to opening of discharge jets. The invention also relates to a corresponding device for implementation of the method. The device comprises a mechanical gauge and float assembly. Mounted below the float is a wave-breaker (18) that is designed to damp high frequency fluctuations in the fluid level in a tank so that the needle reliable shows the gradual change in liquid level as it is dispensed.
