The adhesive for a repositionable, composite non-slip material for protecting floor coverings contains (A) a copolymer of vinyl acetate and acrylic acid and/or (1-4C alkyl) acrylate, (B) a copolymer of styrene and acrylic acid and/or (1-4C alkyl) acrylate, and (C) a polymer thickener. Repositionable composite non-slip material (I) for the protection of floors and floor coverings comprises a support (1) (especially e.g. a rug, fitted carpet or matting) coated on the back with an adhesive material (2) containing (A) 2-6 parts by weight (pts. wt.) polymer material selected from vinyl acetate/acrylic acid (VA/AA) and/or vinyl acetate/(1-4C alkyl) acrylate (VA/AlkA) copolymers in which the ratio of VA units to AA or AlkA units is 1.5/3-2.5/3, (B) 46-54 pts. wt. styrene/AA and/or styrene/AlkA copolymers in which the ratio of styrene units to AA or AlkA units is 1/8-1/10 and (C) 52-40 pts. wt. organic polymer thickener (A + B + C = 100 pts. wt.) An Independent claim is also included for a method for the preparation of (I) by (a) coating the back of support (1) with an aqueous composition with a dry substance content of 47-53 wt%, containing components (A), (B), (C) and possibly a pigment (D) and/or an organic diluent (E), (b) drying the coating at 30-120 (preferably 40-80) deg C in a current of air to give adhesive (2) with a dry film thickness of 70-150 g/m2 and (c) forming a peripheral festoon if required.
