The steering column is composed of a steering shaft (1) rotating in a tube body (2) located between two uprights (11,12) of a support unit (6) fixed to the vehicle structure. The column is height adjustable with a clamping system (4). In order to adjust the column the holding device comprises a rack (81,83) fixed relative to the adjustment direction which engages with a movable rack (82,84) along the adjustment direction. A spring (101,102) acts on one of the racks in the clamping direction so as to ensure, during a collision, the immediate penetration of the teeth and the holding of this penetration during the collision in order to guarantee the position of the steering column relative to the support unit.
