The decorative plate (5), of a plastics material, is formed by cutting a sheet of an appropriate thickness to the required geometrical contour, and the surface is engraved with the required lettering and graphic design. The plate is shaped by heat, using hot air (4), e.g. for the appearance of a parchment roll. The surface is covered with a paint which can dry rapidly within the recessed engraving. The finished plate is mounted to a suitable base support by a bracket, and a three-dimensional decoration can be attached to the surface
