Injected plastic component with transparent zone e.g. for motor vehicle instrument panel light has colored layer surrounding transparent zone

An injected plastic component (16) is combined with a layer (17) of plastic which has at least one transparent zone. The outer surface of the plastic layer incorporates a colored layer surrounding the transparent zone, and it can be marked with a symbol (20) indicating its function. In variants of the design the injected component can be made from an opaque material round a transparent central element that transmits light, or it can have a number of separate 'windows'. The component is made by injection molding round a previously-made central element onto the transparent layer. A colored translucent layer is them applied to it and laser etched to leave the symbol.
