The compensator has a base (1) with a feeler (2) sliding in the base between different engagement positions. A spring biases the feeler to a minimal engagement position. The base and feeler have mutually engaging relief formations in rows extending parallel to the axis (Z) of the compensator, regularly spaced angularly around the axis and separated by neutral zones (10A,20A).
