Method has the following steps: recording in memory of a characteristic reference curve for shock absorber behavior; plotting of a characteristic curve for a shock absorber during vehicle use that is representative of the shock absorbers current behavior; comparison of the current and reference curves; and generation of an alarm when a threshold difference is exceeded. An Independent claim is made for an onboard device for monitoring shock absorber behavior with accelerometers for recording current shock absorber behavior.
