Method of correcting the chemical hardness of water under pressure in an installation comprises applying low frequency powerful ultrasound waves to part of an installation, either a section of water pipe (16, 18) or a lower part of a water storage reservoir (1). The waves have a total power of at least twenty watts, preferably 50 W and a frequency not more than 1 MHz, preferably 28 kHz.
