The retractable side extension (3) for the rear gangway (2) of a road works vehicle (1) comprises a platform with a guardrail (31). The platform is mounted at one of the ends (203) of the platform (20) of the rear gangway so as to pivot about an axis (X-X') perpendicular to the platform plane between working and road positions. In the working position it is in alignment with the platform and in the road position is retracted under the platform and the guardrail seals the side end of the gangway. An Independent claim is included for a road works vehicle.
