Hollow cruciform tubular structures (12) having an axis of symmetry (18) may be welded to tubes (2) at a welding plane (3) by using an electron gun in a vacuum chamber. The electron gun is mounted vertically to point downward to the workpiece on an angle and rotatable base. Welds are made at successive rotations with both walls of a tube, reinforced where necessary, being welded simultaneously at a controlled speed
