A rotating member (2) which has a tooth (3) and shoulders (3a,3b) turns adjacent to a magnet (4) and the resulting induction is measured by a Hall type sensor (5) which is connected (7) to a measuring unit (6). A phase error between the induction signal and the actual rotation of the member is corrected by applying to a compensating winding (9) an attenuated sinusoidal current which settles at a steady compensating value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) An electromagnetic winding which may be energized to modify the field of a detector permanent magnet and thus correct any phase error; (2) Application to position detector for internal combustion engine camshaft.
