A directory server comprising a supplier server, is linked to a consumer server, uses a plurality of pluggable services and a change log to manage the replication of data in the directory server from the supplier server to the consumer server. The change log of the data replicated to the consumer server is maintained on the consumer server. The replication of data is could also be managed by the directory information tree and subtree copied between the supplier server and the directory server. A change sequence number created by a change sequence number service, could be used to determine the ordering of the update operation, by creating a unique combination of numbers used to update an attribute value in a directory information tree. The change sequence number could be used to resolve the update ordering of operations by comparing the change sequence numbers of the operations. Also the update could be determined by an update vector where the vector comprises a change sequence number for every data replica.
