PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for modifying natural fiber consisting of plant cellulose fiber through favorably improving the mechanical properties thereof, particularly including tensile strength and strain at break, to provide an apparatus for performing the method, to provide the resultant modified natural fiber, and to provide composite materials using the modified natural fiber.;SOLUTION: The method for modifying natural fiber comprises the steps of applying an axial tension of 10-200 MPa on the natural fiber, subjecting the natural fiber under tension to alkali treatment with an alkaline solution, and washing the natural fiber subjected to the alkali treatment to remove alkali residues therefrom.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
