PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly water absorbing polyvinyl alcohol-based fiber having fiber performance necessary for obtaining such a fiber structure as a nonwoven fabric, even though it has highly water absorbing performance, and capable of being produced at a low cost.;SOLUTION: This polyvinyl alcohol-based fiber is formed by introducing a crosslinking component into a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol-based polymer and satisfies conditions (1) to (3) as follows: (1) a water absorption magnification at 30°C in water is 10 to 100 times; (2) a fiber diameter in a water absorption state at 30°C in water is 2 to 10 times the fiber diameter prior to water absorption; and (3) a melting point is 160-220°C and a heat of fusion is 40-100 J/g.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
