PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an equalizer and an equalization method to be used for an HDTV. PSOLUTION: In the equalizer of the HDTV for receiving input signals including data signals and training sequences and for compensating distortion of the input signal, the equalizer of the HDTV is provided with an input signal re-utilization part, a filtering part and an error operation part. When a predetermined equalizer output signal is not converged, the input signal re-utilization part inputs the training sequence which is stored during a training mode to the prescribed filtering part during a blind mode. The filtering part receives the output signal of the input signal re-utilization part and outputs a signal compensated by compensating the distortion of the input signal as an equalizer output signal in response to a predetermined error signal and a prescribed determination value. The error operation part receives the equalizer output signal, approximates the equalizer output signal to a fixed approximate value. generates the signal as a determination value and generates a difference between the equalizer output signal and the determination value as an error signal.
