PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing side-tunnel type polarization preserving optical fiber having a small transmission loss.;SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing side-tunnel type polarization preserving optical fiber is provided with a step of preparing a rod material formed in such a manner that a core formation part 1a becoming a core 4 is extended in the rod 1 axis direction and a pair of hole formation pores 2 becoming a pair of holes 8 disposed so as to hold the core formation part 1a therebetween is extended along the core formation part 1a, a step of manufacturing rod preform 1' in which the surface in the hole formation pores 2 is smoothed by heating and extending rod material, a step of performing etching treatment for the surface in the hole formation pores 2 of the rod preform 1' in such a manner that the hole formation pores 2 are not brought into contact with the core formation part 1a, a step of performing dehydration treatment for the surface in the hole formation pores 2 of the rod preform 1', a step of devising a means to block the penetration of the air into the hole formation pores 2 of the rod preform 1' and a step of drawing the rod preform 1' into a fiber form by heating and extending the same.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
