PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dispersion analysis method and a polarization dispersion compensating apparatus for measuring the polarization dispersion of a single-mode optical fiber and each kind of optical device and compensating for the polarization dispersion.;SOLUTION: A dispersion analysis apparatus comprises a coherent light source 1; a constant-temperature bath 15; a polarization rotating mechanism 2; a lens 4 for applying signal light from the polarization rotating mechanism 2 entering an optical medium 3 to be measured, to a first polarization splitting element 5; a semitransparent mirror 8 and a movable semitransparent mirror 9; light receiving units 10, 11 for receiving the transmitted signal light; Faraday rotation elements 6, 7 for rotating the polarization surface of the reflected signal light by 90 degrees; a second polarization splitting element 12, having a relative azimuth difference of 45 degrees from the natural polarization axis of the first polarization separation element 5, for separating interference light that is reflected by the first polarization splitting element 5 for interference; and light-receiving units 13, 14 for receiving two natural polarizations, separated by the second polarization splitting element 12.
