PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high-quality reduced metal by modifying low-grade coal such as coal having highly volatile content which is not adequate hitherto to a method for producing the reduced metal by a carbonaceous material-charging method into modified coal for metallurgy suitable for the carbonaceous material-charging method and using the modified coal for metallurgy as a charged carbonaceous material. PSOLUTION: The modified coal 111 for metallurgy in which softening fluidity is increased more than coal is produced by heating and aging the coal in an organic solvent. A mixture of the modified coal 111 for metallurgy with a metal oxide-containing raw material 112 is aggregated by using a granulator 113 and the aggregate 114 is reduced by heating in a travelling hearth furnace 115 and successively heat-melted to provide a reduced melted material. The reduced solidified material is cooled and solidified in the travelling hearth furnace 115 to provide a reduced solidified material 116 and the reduced solidified material 116 is discharged to the outside of the furnace, and a slag 119 is separated and removed by a screen 117 and a metal 118 is recovered as the reduced metal.
