PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for acquiring data on the spin and mechanical twist of an optical fiber which are information regarding the result of applying rotational force on the optical fiber during its manufacture.;SOLUTION: The system and the method use a diameter measuring device that produces a signal corresponding to the fiber's diameter with respect to time. Since the fiber is slightly elliptical in practice, periodical variations in the diameter measurement signal that reflect the rotation imparted into the fiber are detected. The signal is further processed to provide data regarding the effect of the rotations introduced into the fiber, namely, the twist and spin present in the fiber.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
