PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for arranging an optical pickup system and an optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus with the system arranged by applying the same. PSOLUTION: The optical pickup system which includes a diffraction optical system for branching incident light to 3 beams of light by diffraction, a plate type beam splitter for converting an optical path and a photodetector provided with at least one main photodetector and a plurality of sub-photodetectors and diffracts the optical path by a reflection mirror member and progresses the light to a recording medium is arranged at a deck of the optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus. The method of arranging the optical pickup system includes a step of arranging the optical pickup system in such a manner that the optical path axis c inclines to the axis of the tangential direction of the recording medium and that the photodetector is located away from the center of rotation of a motor for rotating the optical disk and a step of selectively optimizing the arrangement of the photodetector in such a manner that the tracking error signal by a phase difference detection method can be detected.
