PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a visible light response type highly functional zinc oxide photocatalyst for utilizing solar energy or indoor lighting by solving a problem wherein both zinc oxide and titanium oxide absorb only ultraviolet rays of short wavelength, and hardly cause catalytic reaction by visible light.;SOLUTION: The photocatalyst is formed by causing metal oxide to be carried on the surface of zinc oxide powder by an impregnation method. The zinc oxide powder is produced by a dry method in accordance with a French process, wherein the primary particles have a square or hexagonal prism shape, and the mean particle diameter thereof is 0.1 to 0.5 μm. The photocatalyst has catalytic activity responding to the irradiation of visible light and is expressed by the formula of MOx-ZnO, wherein MOx is at least one or more kinds selected from metal oxides capable of absorbing visible light such as vanadium oxide, iron oxide, tungsten oxide, copper oxide, tantalum oxide, ruthenium oxide, chromium oxide, manganese oxide, cadmium oxide and indium oxide, and x is a ratio of the number of the metal to oxygen atoms.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
