PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a uniform hydrated titania gel layer of excellent adhesibility on a surface of metal titanium based base material with excellent reproducibility by a simple operation irrespective of the chemical composition of, a forming method for and the mode of the metal titanium based base material to be used, and a medical material which has the thus obtained hydrated titania gel layer or a heat-treated layer thereof and is excellent in biocompatibility such as apatite organization potency and blood compatibility .;SOLUTION: In a surface treatment method for a metal titanium based base material, a hydrated titania gel layer is formed on a surface of the metal titanium based base material by immersing the metal titanium based base material in hydrogen peroxide aqueous solution with alkaline compound, acid compound or titanium salt added thereto. The formed hydrated titania gel is preferably heat-treated, and the medical material excellent in apatite organization potency and blood compatibility is provided. If the concentration of hydrogen peroxide is lowered, bubble generation caused by decomposition of hydrogen peroxide is suppressed, which is very effective for the surface treatment of the base material having a microstructure.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
