PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an observation device and an observation method of biological material with which an image quality matched with an observation purpose is secured by lessening time required for auto-focusing action when fluorescent photography is used.;SOLUTION: A first temporary focal point P1 and a second temporary focal point P2 are sequentially stopped down and detected by first bright light scan and second bright light scan performed under bright light illumination, when focusing by using an auto-focusing function prior to observation of biological material which images and observes the biological material by imaging with the fluorescent photography. The image is scanned with the minute fluorescent scan pitch D3 in a narrow fluorescent scan range W3 centering on the second temporary focal point P2 in the case of fluorescent scan for the focusing under fluorescent illumination. Thus, the time required for auto-focusing action is lessened, and the image quality in accordance with observation purpose is secured without degeneration or discoloration.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
