PURPOSE: To provide a technique for efficiently and inexpensively recovering each platinum group metal from a platinum group metal-containing iron alloy obtained by reducing and melting a waste catalyst. ;CONSTITUTION: The platinum group metal-containing iron alloy obtained by reducing and melting the waste catalyst is pulverized and leached by chlorine, iron powder is added into the resultant leached liquid to reduce platinum group metal ion in the solution, the resultant platinum concentrate is dissolved with hydrochloric acid and an oxidizing agent and neutralized to separate and remove metals except platinum group metal coexisting in the solution as the precipitate. Pd is recovered by extracting and separating Pd with a dihexyl sulfide based organic extracting agent from the resultant platinum group solution and back extracting Pd from the organic extract. The impurities in the residual liquid after Pd is extracted is separated by extracting with a carboxylic acid based organic solvent, Pt in the residual liquid after extraction is recovered by separating and extracting with tributyl phosphate based organic solvent and back extracting from the organic extract and rhodium is recovered as rhodium hydroxide by adding an alkali in the residual liquid.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
